FWS-8500の特長は、インテル® E5-2600 V3シリーズXeon®プロセッサおよびインテル® 8925チップセットの搭載と、QATサポートの内蔵です。システムメモリーは、288ピンDDR4 1600/1866/2133 MHz（CPUあたり8 DIMM） RDIMM x 16（最大128 GB）に対応しています。ストレージは、CompactFlash™ タイプ2コネクター（ATAモード）、2.5インチ（2台）または3.5インチ（1台）のSATA HDDからなります。入出力ポートも、USB 2.0、8レーンPCI-E Gen2スロット・オンボード、電源LED x 1、HDD動作LED x 1、バイパスLED x 1、LCMディスプレイ x 1、オプションのPCI-E拡張スロット x 2など、豊富です。
FWS-8500は、AAEONが設計したNIM-C13A、NIM-S13A、NIM-S26Aなどのネットワークインターフェースモジュール向けのスワップ可能設計による構成となっています。さらに、FWS-8500は、電源障害検知モード、ジャンパーレス、システム障害検知モード、プログラマブル強制バイパスモードなど、先進のバイパス機能を提供します。
